Halo Campaign Evolved Has Listened to Feedback, But I’m not Convinced It’s Enough

Halo: Campaign Evolved, a rebuilt version of the 2001 classic Halo: Combat Evolved, launches July 28, 2026 on PlayStation 5 (a series first), Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Developer Halo Studios reconstructed the campaign in Unreal Engine—a series first—and included no competitive multiplayer. The remake features the “Perspective” Skull, enabling third-person gameplay for experiencing missions from a new viewpoint. Premium Edition pre-orders include up to five days early access starting July 23.

Following hands-on previews at Summer Game Fest and Xbox Game Showcase, reactions are mixed. Reviewers played two remastered missions: “Assault on the Control Room” and “The Silent Cartographer.” While Halo Studios has addressed fan feedback during development, critics remain unconvinced. GameSpot’s Jean-Luc Seipke found the missions lackluster, describing the remake as “an amalgamation of all the Halos” while losing what made the original unique. Seipke expressed concern the game feels like generic Halo rather than a faithful recreation of 2001’s experience.

Polygon’s reviewer offered a more enthusiastic take, calling the third-person perspective option “revolutionary” after experiencing the remade missions. This divergence suggests the remake’s reception may hinge on how players respond to its reinterpretation and the new gameplay perspective.
