Vanillaware’s Underrated Wii Gem Returns On Switch 1 & 2 Early Next Year
Vanillaware’s acclaimed 2D action RPG Muramasa is making a return with Muramasa: Revenant Blades, announced during Nintendo’s June Direct showcase. The game will launch in early 2027 on Nintendo Switch (both original and Switch 2) as well as PC in an expanded 4K version, marking the first time Vanillaware has brought one of their games to the platform.
The new release is based on the 2009 Wii original, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, which was previously remastered for PlayStation Vita in 2013 as Muramasa Rebirth. Revenant Blades will include characters and DLC content from the Vita version along with additional enhancements, leveraging technology that Vanillaware’s president indicated had previously prevented new versions from being developed.
This announcement comes after years of PC gaming fans requesting Vanillaware titles on the platform. The studio’s other acclaimed games, including 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Unicorn Overlord, have remained exclusive to console platforms, with publishing decisions and other factors creating confusion about their PC availability. Muramasa: Revenant Blades represents a significant shift in the developer’s approach to platform distribution, finally bringing one of their gorgeous sprite-based action RPGs to PC alongside console releases.
