Pathfinder creators Paizo have $10 million of inventory stuck in a warehouse somewhere because of Diamond Comics, forcing it to lay off staff
Paizo, the publisher and developer of Pathfinder 2e, has announced a staff reduction of 12 employees due to a significant inventory crisis involving Diamond Comics Distributors. Approximately $10 million worth of Paizo’s own products are currently held in a warehouse that the company cannot access.
Paizo and numerous other game publishers have been engaged in ongoing court battles with Diamond Comics to reclaim their inventory. The company’s statement indicates it has been forced to reduce staff as a direct consequence of frozen capital, representing a rare instance of industry layoffs driven by legitimate external business factors rather than corporate mismanagement or acquisition decisions.
This situation highlights the vulnerability of publishers dependent on third-party distribution infrastructure. The trapped inventory represents a substantial financial loss that has effectively frozen working capital, leaving Paizo with no choice but to reduce expenses through workforce reduction. The layoffs underscore broader industry fragility when distribution channels encounter financial or operational difficulties, impacting not only the publisher but also their employees and the communities that rely on their products.
