Roblox Wants Child Sex Abuse Lawsuits Settled Out Of Court
Roblox is facing an extensive legal battle over child safety protections. Over 150 federal lawsuits, along with additional state-level cases, have been filed against the platform, with hundreds of plaintiffs accusing Roblox of failing to protect children from predators despite public statements claiming otherwise. The lawsuits seek to hold the multi-billion dollar company accountable for alleged inaction against child exploitation on the platform.
However, Roblox is attempting to circumvent public litigation through contractual language. The platform’s terms of service contain an arbitration clause requiring users to waive their right to file lawsuits in court or participate in class actions. Instead, disputes—including those related to child safety—would be resolved through private arbitration rather than before a judge and jury.
The company’s approach highlights ongoing tension between tech platforms’ attempt to limit legal liability through binding arbitration agreements and public demand for accountability in cases involving child safety. If successful, the arbitration clauses could force hundreds of individual cases into private proceedings rather than consolidated court litigation, potentially making it harder to establish patterns of negligence or coordinate a broader legal response.
