Bloober Team Says It’s Humbled By The “Many Corpses” In The Horror Multiplayer Genre
Bloober Team and Anshar Studios have announced Saw: Genesis, a 3v1 asymmetrical horror multiplayer game based on Lionsgate’s Saw franchise, revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026. The game adapts the iconic slasher concept into a cooperative escape room experience where three victims must work together to navigate deadly traps while one mastermind player controls Jigsaw and interferes from the shadows.
The developers are tackling the inherent challenge of translating Saw into multiplayer gameplay: Jigsaw is portrayed as a weak strategist hidden behind monitors rather than a physical threat. Saw: Genesis addresses this by emphasizing puzzle-solving and trap mechanics over direct combat.
Bloober Team acknowledges entering a crowded and challenging space. The asymmetrical horror multiplayer genre has become increasingly saturated as studios race to capitalize on licensed properties. The team expressed concern about the market’s graveyard of failed licensed horror games—titles that couldn’t maintain player interest post-launch, leaving developers struggling to justify continued support.
The game’s viability will hinge on early access reception and community feedback. Bloober Team plans to use the experimental period to refine mechanics and ensure the escape room concept integrates effectively with competitive multiplayer gameplay. If executed successfully, Saw: Genesis could establish itself as a meaningful addition to the genre, though the crowded marketplace and track record of licensed game failures present significant obstacles.
