Square-Enix Should Resurrect Its Graveyard Of Mobile Games After Final Fantasy Resonance

Square-Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, billed as “the first HD-2D Final Fantasy.” The game is a remake of Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, a former mobile title known for its detailed 2D spritework. This represents part of a broader trend following the adaptation of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent into Octopath Traveler 0.

The significance lies in the different fates of these source games. While Champions of the Continent continues operating, Brave Exvius was discontinued in 2024 globally and in Japan shortly thereafter, leaving the game completely inaccessible to players. The article argues this resurrection demonstrates how Square-Enix could revive other defunct mobile games from its extensive portfolio that would otherwise remain lost to audiences.

This strategy suggests a potential shift toward game preservation, allowing dead live-service titles to find new life on console platforms. By adapting these former mobile games for HD-2D console releases, Square-Enix is not only creating new gaming experiences but also addressing the inherent impermanence of live-service games, whose servers eventually shut down permanently.
