Capcom Explains How Tifa From Final Fantasy 7 Came to Be a Street Fighter 6 DLC Character
Capcom has revealed how Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 was secured as a guest DLC character for Street Fighter 6. The announcement of Tifa as part of the game’s Year 4 DLC roster, alongside characters Yasmine, Arjun, and Bosch, was one of the highlights of Summer Game Fest 2026.
According to director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto, the collaboration came about through a mutual friend at Square Enix who is a fan of Street Fighter 6. Conversations between Capcom and Square Enix began approximately three years ago, around the time of Street Fighter 6’s acclaimed release, exploring potential collaboration opportunities between the two companies.
The discussion evolved into exploring guest character opportunities from Square Enix’s intellectual properties. Given that the Final Fantasy 7 remake series was particularly active at the time, Tifa emerged as an ideal candidate. Her extensive martial arts background and combat expertise made her a natural fit for Street Fighter 6’s fighting-focused gameplay.
The move was somewhat unexpected, as Tekken fans had previously hoped to see Tifa make an appearance in Bandai Namco’s competing fighting game franchise instead. However, her integration into Street Fighter 6 demonstrates how cross-company collaborations in the fighting game space continue to evolve, bringing iconic characters from different franchises to broader audiences. The multi-year negotiation process highlights the complexity of securing licensing agreements and creative partnerships between major gaming publishers, particularly when dealing with beloved characters with established fanbases.
