Ubisoft closing Winnipeg and Belgrade studios and making further layoffs
Ubisoft has announced the closure of its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at reducing costs and refocusing on strategic priorities. The Canadian studio, founded in 2018 with approximately 85-100 employees, specialized in developing the company’s proprietary Anvil and Snowdrop game engines. The Serbian studio, established in 2016 and employing around 100 people, contributed to multiple titles including Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, The Crew 2, Rainbow Six, and Skull & Bones.
In addition to these closures, Ubisoft Barcelona will be restructured to focus exclusively on the Rainbow Six franchise. Approximately 51 Barcelona employees—roughly 28% of the studio’s workforce—are affected by this change. The company is also implementing organizational changes across its Global Publishing division, which will involve role reductions throughout the company.
Reports indicate that approximately 120 developers at Ubisoft Montreal are being transitioned off the Rainbow Six Siege project (about 12% of its team), while around 50 employees are being moved off Rainbow Six Siege Mobile and an unannounced project. The company notes these personnel moves are currently reassignments rather than layoffs, though sources suggest additional layoffs may follow.
In total, these actions could impact approximately 380 positions. The restructuring is part of Ubisoft’s broader cost-reduction strategy, following the company’s commitment to reduce fixed costs by €200 million over the next two years. This announcement comes amid a challenging period for the publisher, which has already cancelled multiple games and conducted several rounds of layoffs in recent months.
