Critical Role star reveals why Percy takes charge in The Legend of Vox Machina’s heist episode

Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina continues to surprise fans with unexpected plot developments and creative reimaginings of the Critical Role campaign material. The latest episode, titled “De Rolo’s Eleven,” follows the animated series’ tradition of subverting expectations while delivering compelling storytelling.

The episode title and opening credits pay homage to Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 heist film Ocean’s Eleven, a thematic reference that extends to the episode’s narrative. In “De Rolo’s Eleven,” the majority of Vox Machina reunites for an ambitious heist sequence targeting the Cobalt Soul’s archives located in Rexentruum, the capital city of the Draconic Continent.

The Cobalt Soul, a warrior-monk organization that will be familiar to fans of Critical Role’s second campaign The Mighty Nein, serves as the episode’s central location and narrative focus. The episode marks a significant character moment for Percy, who takes on a leadership role orchestrating the heist. Voice actor Matthew Mercer explained the character’s motivations and decision to lead the operation.

Season 4 has been marked by significant narrative shifts, including Grog’s unexpected musical performance, the mysterious disappearance of Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel’s halfling bard character), and an extensive underwater battle sequence featuring Keyleth (Marisha Ray’s elven druid). These developments showcase the animation team’s willingness to expand and reimagine the source material from the actual play campaign, creating moments specifically tailored for the animated adaptation.
