Xbox ‘console exclusives’ are strictly about console releases, Xbox exec affirms: Games will ‘still show up on all the normal places where we sell the PC version’
Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty has clarified the company’s strategy surrounding “console exclusives,” following confusion created by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s recent announcement that Gears of War: E-Day is an “Xbox console exclusive.”
In an interview with GameInformer, Booty explained that Xbox’s use of the term “console exclusive” specifically refers to exclusivity on Xbox consoles, not exclusivity from other platforms entirely. Games designated as Xbox console exclusives will remain available on PC through all standard distribution channels where Xbox typically sells PC versions.
This definition is strategically significant: it allows Xbox to maintain exclusive positioning against PlayStation while simultaneously leveraging the company’s broader PC gaming presence. Rather than using game exclusivity as a tool to drive players toward console hardware alone, Xbox appears to be adopting a strategy that treats console and PC as distinct markets—exclusive from console competitors but integrated within its own ecosystem.
The clarification reflects Xbox’s multi-platform approach under its current leadership, emphasizing that console exclusivity and PC availability are not mutually exclusive within the company’s business model.
