Xbox speedruns ‘we’re so back’ to ‘it’s so over’ pipeline at a speed previously thought impossible

Microsoft’s Xbox division announced a mixed week of developments. At the company’s annual summer showcase in Los Angeles, new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed upcoming games including a Halo remake, a Gears of War prequel, and a new action game featuring Senua. Event attendees with special badges were offered complimentary limited edition Xbox Series X consoles.

The positive messaging was quickly tempered by an internal letter sent Wednesday to Xbox employees, titled “Xbox Reset,” which conveyed more sobering news. The letter disclosed that the division faces production constraints, stating that Xbox is “currently unable to make as many consoles as players want to buy.” More significantly, the communication warned of forthcoming layoffs, with leadership characterizing the restructuring as a strategic “reset” intended to pave the way for future growth and success.

The rapid shift from celebrating new games and rewarding enthusiasts to announcing layoffs highlights the turbulent period facing the Xbox division, suggesting broader challenges related to console manufacturing, market positioning, or strategic direction.
