Arm shows off its answer to DLSS on Android - and a whole-ass game by Sumo Digital with Unreal Engine 5 MegaLights
Arm has announced its answer to Nvidia’s DLSS technology for mobile gaming. The British chip architecture company unveiled three AI-driven techniques designed to enhance visual quality while maintaining performance on Android devices: NSS (neural super sampling), NSSD (neural super sampling with denoising), and NFRU (neural frame-rate upscaling). These technologies leverage machine learning to improve graphics without the performance cost of traditional rendering methods.
To demonstrate the capabilities of these neural technologies, Arm partnered with Sumo Digital to create Neural Dawn, a full-length mobile game built with Unreal Engine 5’s MegaLights feature. The game serves as a showcase for how the upscaling and frame-rate enhancement techniques can deliver advanced visuals on mobile hardware while maintaining smooth gameplay performance.
The announcement reflects a broader industry trend where AI-assisted rendering techniques are becoming standard across different gaming platforms. Similar technologies like DLSS have proven successful on PC and console gaming, and their adoption on mobile represents the next step in democratizing advanced graphics for handheld devices. Arm’s approach suggests that mobile gaming is approaching performance and visual fidelity levels previously reserved for more powerful hardware, enabled by neural network-powered optimization techniques.
