From Mr. Potato Head to a cosmic ’70s documentary, Spore’s creators share how it came to be
Spore’s creation is explored in a retrospective oral history featuring insights from the game’s developers at Maxis, the studio where Will Wright led the project. Wright’s initial concept was inspired by his ambition to adapt “Powers of 10,” a 1977 cosmic documentary that explores scale from the largest to smallest perspectives. Designer and lead engineer Chris Hecker and other key team members describe how diverse influences—from Mr. Potato Head to cosmic documentaries—shaped the creature creator’s development. Rather than emerging from a single originating vision, Spore came together through collaborative creativity and cross-pollination of ideas. The Design Room’s oral history piece demonstrates how the distinctive gameplay experience resulted from the convergence of multiple inspirations and creative contributions from the development team, offering behind-the-scenes perspective on how one of gaming’s most unique creature-creation experiences came to be.
