Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis feels strangely double-A

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, an upcoming remake of the original 1996 game, debuted at Summer Game Fest 2026 with extended hands-on demos. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the game reimagines the classic that launched a 30-year franchise, featuring the iconic dual-pistol wielding Lara Croft.

A notable aspect of the remake is its integration into the franchise’s modern timeline. Despite remaking the first game, Legacy of Atlantis is canonically set after the Survivor trilogy (Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider). Players encounter the same Lara Croft from those games, now described as being at the “top of her game” and in her prime, having moved beyond her Survivor era struggles.

Demo impressions reveal the game balances classic Tomb Raider precision platforming with modern gameplay sensibilities. Players navigated Peruvian environments featuring dinosaurs and ancient mysteries, with gameplay emphasizing acrobatics and exploration. However, some observers noted the game carries a somewhat “double-A” quality rather than feeling like a full triple-A production, possibly reflecting a more measured scope.

The remake is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 next year. With its dual focus on honoring the original game’s legacy while continuing Lara’s modern story arc, Legacy of Atlantis aims to appeal to both longtime franchise fans and those discovering the character through the recent Survivor trilogy reboot.
