Xbox says hardware pricing boom represents “great” opportunity for games streaming

Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball has indicated that rising hardware prices present a favorable opportunity for cloud gaming growth. Speaking at The Games Business Live event, Ball stated that Xbox Cloud Gaming has already attracted significantly more users despite the broader console market facing pricing pressures due to increased memory costs linked to the AI industry boom.

Ball emphasized Xbox’s ongoing commitment to console gaming, stating “We feel very strongly about a return to Xbox,” and dismissing notions that the console market is declining. While acknowledging that mobile gaming currently dominates the industry’s revenue and player base, Ball maintained that consoles remain crucial to Microsoft’s gaming strategy. He stressed that cloud gaming is just one component of a broader, multi-faceted approach.

The executive also addressed Xbox’s exclusivity strategy. Following recent shifts toward more third-party development, Xbox is reasserting its exclusive lineup. Ball explained the rationale behind exclusivity decisions, with upcoming exclusive titles like Gears of War: E-Day demonstrating continued investment in platform-exclusive content. However, many recent Xbox showcase announcements revealed games releasing across multiple platforms, reflecting a balanced approach.

The comments come amid broader industry discussions about next-generation hardware as hardware pricing increases from major console manufacturers create uncertainty around future gaming costs.
