Elden Ring Director Insists FromSoftware Is Free to Make the Games It Wants To, Teases ‘Unannounced Titles’

Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of the Dark Souls and Elden Ring franchises, has addressed concerns about shareholder pressure on FromSoftware’s parent company Kadokawa. The video game developer offered reassurance to fans worried about activist investor involvement, stating that FromSoftware can still “freely make the kind of games we want to make without excessive interference.”

Kadokawa, the Japanese multimedia conglomerate that owns FromSoftware, has recently attracted significant attention due to activist investment firm Oasis Management Company gradually acquiring the largest stake in the company. This shareholder activism has raised concerns within the gaming community about potential interference in FromSoftware’s creative direction and development practices.

Miyazaki’s comments appear designed to calm fears that external financial pressure could compromise the studio’s autonomy or force unwanted changes to its game development philosophy. The director’s statement emphasizes that despite corporate restructuring at the parent company level, FromSoftware retains creative freedom in its projects.

The reassurance comes as FromSoftware reportedly has multiple unannounced titles in development. Miyazaki’s comments suggest the studio will continue pursuing its own creative vision regardless of shareholder dynamics at Kadokawa.
