Two More Games Are Losing Online Services Soon
Two video game titles are set to lose their online services in the coming years, with major publishers announcing server closure dates for their respective titles.
Grid Legends, published by EA, will have its online multiplayer support discontinued on PlayStation and Xbox consoles on September 11, 2026. However, the game will continue to maintain functioning servers on Steam and Nintendo Switch 2, meaning players on those platforms can keep enjoying online features indefinitely.
TopSpin 2K25, published by 2K, faces a later deadline for its server shutdown. The game’s online services will go offline on December 31, 2027—a significant extension from the company’s previous announcement of a December 2026 closure. Players now have an extra year of online functionality beyond what was initially planned.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, 2K explained that supporting legacy titles while simultaneously managing newer releases eventually becomes “commercially unfeasible.” This reasoning reflects a widespread industry pattern where publishers regularly retire online services for older games to redirect resources and infrastructure toward current releases.
The divergent timelines and platform-specific shutdowns highlight the fragmentation of modern gaming ecosystems. Grid Legends exemplifies this trend, where the same title has different online functionality depending on platform—players on consoles will lose access while PC and Switch 2 players retain full capabilities. This disparity underscores ongoing discussions within the gaming community about digital ownership, game preservation, and the sustainability of live-service gaming models.
