We now know when Guild Wars 3 takes place, but even 20 years after the series began, it doesn’t sound like we’ll see an actual storied guild war
ArenaNet has revealed the setting for Guild Wars 3 through a new video on the official Guild Wars YouTube channel. The game takes place approximately 1,000 years before the first Guild Wars, during an ancient era when human gods roamed the kingdom of Orr.
The announcement highlights a peculiar quirk of the franchise’s 20-year history: despite being named after three legendary in-universe guild wars that serve as foundational to the series’ lore, neither of the two existing games has actually depicted these pivotal battles from a player’s perspective. Guild Wars 3 appears unlikely to change this pattern.
By positioning the new game so far in the past, ArenaNet will explore the world during an era of direct divine presence. However, the franchise will apparently continue its tradition of treating the actual guild wars as historical background rather than playable events, meaning the series may never fulfill its core premise of letting players experience the conflicts that define its name.
This lore revelation comes as ArenaNet continues developing Guild Wars 3, which has generated significant anticipation from the franchise’s dedicated player base.
