SNK Announces Two Metal Slug Projects in the Works
Metal Slug, the run-and-gun shooter franchise that launched in 1996 on arcade hardware, is celebrating three decades of existence with the announcement of two new projects currently in development at SNK. The iconic series has evolved significantly since its Neo Geo debut, expanding to numerous home platforms including Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and Nintendo systems, accumulating over a dozen total releases with seven mainline entries.
The franchise’s latest release, Metal Slug Tactics, arrived in late 2024 across PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox platforms, successfully bringing tactical gameplay mechanics to the series. Building on this momentum, SNK has revealed two new projects in the pipeline: a dedicated mobile game and an additional untitled experience with details currently withheld.
The mobile entry represents a strategic expansion into handheld digital markets, where franchises can reach broader audiences through alternative platforms. The second project remains shrouded in mystery, with SNK providing minimal information about its scope, genre, or intended direction at this stage of announcement.
These announcements underscore SNK’s broader ambitions to diversify the Metal Slug franchise across different gaming platforms and genres while celebrating the series’ remarkable longevity. The 30th anniversary milestone appears to be serving as a catalyst for renewed development efforts, suggesting the company views the franchise as a valuable property for continued exploration and innovation in the coming years.
