Playstack CEO pledges to be ‘mindful’ about growth after majority takeover

UK-based publisher Playstack has been acquired by Integrated Media Company (IMC), with the investment group purchasing an 84.5% stake in the company. The deal valued Playstack at approximately £125 million ($169 million).

Playstack, best known for publishing successful titles including Balatro and Abiotic Factor, becomes part of IMC’s portfolio alongside entertainment brands such as Fandom, GameSpot, Screen Junkies, and Fanatical. IMC itself is a subsidiary of Texas Pacific Group (TPG).

The acquisition raised potential concerns about conflicts of interest, particularly given GameSpot’s prominence as a major video game publication that has covered Playstack titles. However, Playstack CEO Harvey Elliott addressed these concerns directly, stating that IMC has committed to maintaining Playstack as a completely separate entity from its media investments.

Elliott emphasized that IMC operates multiple businesses across different sectors, with games publishing representing a distinct vertical. He expressed confidence in Playstack’s future, noting the company remains committed to its “eclectic” variety publishing approach and has a confident outlook for its game lineup through 2028.

The news reflects ongoing consolidation trends in the gaming industry, where investment groups continue to acquire and manage diverse entertainment portfolios.
