Xbox Memo Predicts over 5x Increase in Storage and Memory Costs by Holiday 2027

Microsoft’s Xbox division is facing a significant business crisis, according to an internal memo released by newly-installed CEO Asha Sharma. The memo, titled “Next 100 Days: Xbox Reset,” outlines stark challenges requiring immediate strategic realignment and “tough decisions” in the coming weeks.

The most critical issue is a severe spike in memory and storage component costs. These prices have doubled twice since fall 2025—first between fall 2025 and February 2026, then again between February and June—and are projected to quintuple by the 2027 holiday season. RAM prices follow a similar trajectory due to shared supply chain constraints. Xbox is particularly vulnerable to these increases due to architectural choices made in previous hardware generations.

Beyond hardware costs, Xbox’s business model is straining under multiple pressures. The division has achieved only a 3% profit margin with year-over-year decline, driven by missed releases from Xbox Game Studios, questionable Game Pass subsidy decisions, and the broader industry memory supply crisis.

The memo’s public release triggered predictions from gaming analysts and reports from Bloomberg of impending organizational changes. Industry observers expect studio shutdowns and significant layoffs across the division, with some analysts suggesting Xbox may explore ad-supported subscription tiers to improve margins. The situation represents a critical turning point for Microsoft’s gaming strategy.
