FF7 Revelation’s visionary is looking beyond a Final Fantasy 6 remake

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, has made clear he is not interested in helming a Final Fantasy 6 remake, despite considerable fan demand for such a project. In an interview with Game Informer discussing the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Hamaguchi acknowledged the widespread community requests for him to lead a FF6 remake. However, he indicated he does not have personal interest in developing that particular game.

Hamaguchi’s comments come as the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation series approaches completion with next year’s third installment. Having directed all three games in the FF7 Remake series—which have collectively introduced a new generation of players to the classic 1997 original—Hamaguchi appears ready to explore different creative directions. His reluctance to pursue a FF6 remake suggests that while fan demand for such a project clearly exists, it may not materialize under his leadership or in the immediate future.

The statement reflects broader questions about Square Enix’s post-Final Fantasy 7 Remake plans and how the studio will allocate its resources among beloved franchise entries.
