Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies vet tells me the theme park ‘assembly line’ MMO just isn’t viable anymore, especially as dev costs spike: ‘We hit the wall’

According to a recent interview in PC Gamer’s “Terminally Online” column, veteran MMO designer Raph Koster has warned that the traditional “assembly line” theme park model of MMO development is no longer viable in the current market. Koster, known for his work on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, cites escalating development costs as a primary factor behind this industry shift.

The core challenge facing MMO developers is a fundamental disconnect between player expectations and industry practices. Players feel increasingly underserved by existing offerings while simultaneously bearing the burden of aggressive monetization strategies. This tension has created an unsustainable market dynamic that existing business models cannot support.

Koster is bringing these insights to his upcoming project, Stars Reach, which attempts to recapture the sandbox design philosophy that defined earlier MMOs like Ultima Online. Rather than following the traditional theme park assembly-line approach that has dominated the genre in recent years, Stars Reach represents an attempt to return to more player-driven, open-ended design principles that may prove more sustainable given current market conditions and development realities.
