HBO casts Harry Potter actor to bring a book character to life

HBO is developing a live-action adaptation of the Harry Potter book series structured in eight-episode seasons, departing from the previous theatrical films. The new series will provide an expanded retelling of J.K. Rowling’s novels, with extended runtime enabling deeper storytelling and inclusion of characters omitted from the films.

The network has cast English actor Peter Serafinowicz, known for Shaun of the Dead and The Tick, as Peeves the Poltergeist—a fan-favorite character from the books who was cut from the film adaptations. According to the official Harry Potter website, Peeves is a chaos-causing phantom that constantly troubles Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, disliked by staff and students alike.

The casting represents HBO’s strategy to prioritize book fidelity while introducing new talent to the franchise. By bringing book-exclusive elements to screen that were absent from the films, the adaptation aims to offer both familiar storytelling and fresh interpretations of the wizarding world for new and longtime fans.
