After three years, Call of Duty is bringing back campaign early access with Modern Warfare 4

Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 4 will offer early campaign access for players who pre-order the game, marking the franchise’s return to this practice after a three-year absence. The single-player campaign will be available up to one week before the game’s official launch, allowing early access players to begin the Korean Peninsula-set story as early as October 16, with the full game releasing on October 23.

The early access offer is available to anyone who pre-orders Modern Warfare 4 on any platform—including Nintendo Switch 2, despite that version not yet being available for pre-order. However, the benefit is limited to digital pre-orders only; physical retail pre-orders do not qualify for early campaign access.

The decision to bring back early campaign access reflects Activision’s strategic approach to pre-order incentives and player engagement. By offering a week-long head start on the single-player campaign, the publisher aims to reward early adopters and generate momentum ahead of the full release. This move also distinguishes the new entry in the franchise from recent titles that haven’t offered similar benefits.

Infinity Ward, the developer behind Modern Warfare 4, has positioned the campaign early access as a special feature exclusive to pre-order customers. The restriction to digital pre-orders suggests Activision’s preference for direct digital sales over traditional retail channels, a growing trend in the gaming industry as publishers seek to strengthen direct relationships with consumers.
