Aphelion and Life is Strange developer Don’t Nod in trouble as it struggles to secure funding for its next project
Don’t Nod, the French developer behind the Life is Strange franchise, faces a critical funding crisis. According to auditors’ reports released this month, the studio will run out of cash by November 2026 unless it secures new investment. As of April 2026, the studio had approximately €8.8 million in cash reserves.
The developer has been actively seeking funding for several months, including requesting additional capital from Tencent, its largest shareholder with a 42 percent stake acquired in 2020. However, Tencent has declined both to increase its financial investment and to contribute financing for the studio’s upcoming projects.
Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Paris with a satellite studio in Montreal, Don’t Nod is best known for creating the Life is Strange narrative adventure series, though recent installments in that franchise have been developed by other studios. The studio has released five games in the past three years, including Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (2025), Aphelion, and Jusant. However, these recent titles have underperformed commercially, failing to generate sufficient revenue to sustain operations.
The studio is currently exploring various funding options as it attempts to avoid cash depletion. This financial crisis comes amid broader industry turbulence, as major publishers face economic pressures.
