Housemarque Hints Its Next PS5 Game Could Be Smaller Than Saros
Housemarque, the Finnish video game studio founded in 1993, has officially integrated into PlayStation’s first-party lineup following the release of its latest title, Saros. The acquisition, completed in 2021, marks a significant milestone for the developer, which transitioned from decades as a PlayStation second-party partner to a fully-owned studio.
The studio has experienced substantial growth under PlayStation’s ownership. Housemarque now employs 120 people, triple the headcount it had a decade ago when it released Nex Machina on PS4. This expansion reflects both the studio’s increasing ambitions and its deepening integration with PlayStation’s operations.
Despite its growth, Housemarque remains relatively lean by modern AAA standards. The completion of Saros required additional support from Nixxes, highlighting the logistical challenges of scaling game development. However, studio leadership expresses confidence about its trajectory, noting that it truly feels like a PlayStation first-party studio following Saros’s successful launch.
Looking ahead, the studio has hinted that its next project may differ in scope from Saros, suggesting a potentially smaller-scale experience. This direction could reflect both the studio’s evolving priorities and PlayStation’s portfolio strategy, ensuring a diverse lineup of exclusive titles rather than pursuing incrementally larger projects.
