Shrek 5 Trailer Reveals Shrek, His Family, and Donkey Travel to a New Kingdom
DreamWorks Animation has released the first official teaser trailer for Shrek 5, confirming a 2027 release date for the long-awaited sequel. The trailer shows Shrek, his family, and Donkey embarking on a new adventure to a kingdom called “Further, Further Away”—a sketchier counterpart to Shrek 2’s Far, Far Away.
The teaser offers glimpses of the gang’s misadventures in their new destination, including encounters with a melting snowman character who references Disney’s “Frozen” by asking Donkey if he wants to “date a snowman.” The trailer also shows the characters being chased by police and thrown into jail, though the reasons for these encounters remain unclear. Notably, Zendaya’s character is absent from all the footage shown.
The film’s announcement comes 25 years after Shrek’s original 2001 debut, which has since become a beloved franchise despite its humble origins as a punishment project for DreamWorks employees. The trailer’s inclusion of Smash Mouth’s “All Star”—the iconic theme song from the original film—serves as a nostalgic callback for longtime fans.
The release also marks another chapter in the ongoing creative competition between DreamWorks and Disney, as evidenced by the Frozen parody moment in the trailer. With the franchise having evolved alongside its aging fanbase, Shrek 5 promises to continue the pattern established by the previous four installments in the series.
