Sony has patented a controller with buttons that harden when you play with it

Sony has filed a patent for a next-generation controller with buttons that can dynamically adjust their hardness and tactile resistance in response to gameplay or user preferences. The patent application was submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in November 2024 and officially published in May 2026.

According to the patent filing, the technology uses magnetoreheological mechanisms to alter the physical properties of button feedback, allowing buttons to become harder or softer based on on-screen events. This adaptive resistance system is designed to enhance immersion and provide contextual haptic feedback that responds to what players are experiencing during gameplay.

The innovation represents an evolution of Sony’s haptic feedback technology already featured in the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, which introduced adaptive triggers and advanced haptic sensations. This new patent suggests Sony is actively exploring ways to enhance tactile feedback for future PlayStation hardware generations.

While patents don’t guarantee commercial implementation, the detailed filing indicates Sony has invested significant research and development into this concept. As gaming hardware manufacturers continue innovating in controller design, adaptive tactile feedback could represent the next frontier in how players physically interact with games and experience immersive feedback.
