Destiny 2 Final Update’s Success Hasn’t ‘Moved the Needle’ at Bungie
Destiny 2, Bungie’s flagship live-service multiplayer game active for nearly a decade, is officially coming to an end with its final content update “Monument of Triumph” released last week. Despite the update’s success—with players overwhelming servers and surpassing Marathon’s peak player count—the strong community engagement has not improved conditions at the studio.
Following Destiny 2’s sunset and the underperformance of new IP title Marathon, Bungie is reportedly bracing for significant organizational restructuring this summer. According to industry sources, the layoffs could affect approximately 400 employees, roughly 50% of Bungie’s ~800-person workforce, and are expected to include major leadership departures as well.
The news contrasts sharply with players’ positive reception of Destiny 2’s finale. Despite strong community support and the game’s technical success in handling player volume, internal challenges at the studio appear to have persisted. Bungie, acquired by Sony in 2022, now faces a critical restructuring period as the company reassesses its direction following Destiny 2’s closure and Marathon’s commercial struggles. The community has responded with a Change.org petition for Destiny 3 that has garnered nearly 400,000 signatures, though reported layoffs suggest any successor would face significant resource constraints.
