Crusader Kings 3 devs Paradox will make the roaming mercenary lifestyle of playing as a landless adventurer free for everyone later this year
Paradox Interactive has announced plans to make the adventurer lifestyle feature from Crusader Kings 3’s “Roads to Power” expansion free for all players later in 2026. Previously locked behind the 2024 expansion paywall, this feature allows players to experience the “roaming mercenary lifestyle” as an unlanded leader building a band of traveling adventurers from scratch. Players can pursue various roles—ruthless mercenary, valiant knight, or bureaucrat—surviving through favors and hired work while searching for the ideal title to claim when they’re ready to establish their domain and build a dynasty.
The decision reflects Paradox’s recognition that this playstyle resonates powerfully with players. According to the developers, they “underestimated how powerful the player fantasy of working your way up from nothing ultimately was.” This shift to free-to-play positioning for the feature diverges from the expansion’s original premium model, likely aiming to introduce more players to the gameplay experience and demonstrate the breadth of options available in the medieval dynasty simulation.
