Rockstar Games has announced a free upgrade offer for Grand Theft Auto 5 players on last-generation consoles. Beginning June 18, 2026, anyone who owns a digital copy of GTA 5 on Xbox One or any version on PlayStation 4—including physical copies—can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost.

The current-generation versions of GTA 5 normally retail for $40. They feature significant technical improvements over their last-gen counterparts, including enhanced graphics, faster loading times, and support for new features like Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles. Players can also easily migrate their Story Mode and Grand Theft Auto Online progress to the upgraded versions.

The announcement comes as Rockstar prepares to launch The Kortz Center Heist, a major new update to GTA Online scheduled for July 2026. The multi-stage heist will task players with infiltrating the prestigious Kortz Center gallery and stealing works of art. This free upgrade offer appears designed to consolidate the player base on current-generation hardware ahead of both this substantial update and the November 2026 launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA 5 has been a remarkable commercial success, spanning three console generations since its initial 2013 release. The game continues to maintain a substantial active player base on last-generation consoles—recent data suggests nearly two million players still actively engage with GTA Online on PS4 alone.
