OtherSide Entertainment lays off 17 staff following game cancellation
OtherSide Entertainment, the independent studio co-founded by veteran developers Warren Spector and Paul Neurath, has announced layoffs affecting 17 team members effective May 31st. The cuts follow the cancellation of an internally codenamed project called Argos.
In a statement to Game Developer, the studio acknowledged that while Argos “could have been a huge success in normal times,” the project became “unviable for now” due to the current gaming landscape, which they characterized as “brutally challenging.” The cancellation reflects broader industry pressures facing independent game developers navigating an increasingly competitive and volatile market.
Despite the difficult news, OtherSide Entertainment publicly commended the departing staff, telling other studios: “To any studios out there hiring, we cannot recommend these impacted people highly enough.” The studio did not disclose the names of affected employees.
The news underscores ongoing challenges for independent developers pursuing ambitious, resource-intensive projects, particularly in an era marked by industry consolidation, evolving market conditions, and intensifying competition for player attention and publishing support.
