PlayerUnknown’s survival game becomes free-to-own and offers Steam refunds ‘without restrictions on playtime or how long ago you bought the game’
“Prologue: Go Wayback!”, an open-world survival game developed by PlayerUnknown Productions (founded by PUBG creator Brendan Greene), has transitioned to free-to-own status on Steam. However, the game is exiting early access in an incomplete state with no plans for continued development.
The title initially entered early access in 2025 but the studio announced a halt to development less than a year later, following staff layoffs. Despite this, PlayerUnknown Productions released what it described as the “final update” to the game.
In response, Valve is offering Steam refunds without typical restrictions. Players can request refunds regardless of how long they’ve owned the game or how much they’ve played it—departing from Steam’s standard 14-day / 2-hour playtime policy. This unprecedented gesture acknowledges the disappointing conclusion to early access.
The move reflects broader challenges facing early access games, where ambitious projects sometimes fail to reach completion due to financial or production pressures. For PlayerUnknown Productions, making the game free while ceasing development represents an attempt to preserve goodwill after the project’s premature termination.
