You can now use the Game Boy Camera with your phone
The GB Operator, a $50 accessory developed by device-maker Epilogue, has received a new iOS and Android mobile app that enables users to utilize the Game Boy Camera with their smartphones. The GB Operator is designed to connect, play, and authenticate cartridges from the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance across various platforms, including PCs and other devices.
The Game Boy Camera captures images at 128x112 pixels in 2-bit color, producing the distinctive low-resolution, pixelated aesthetic characteristic of the original hardware. These images are described as producing “terrible” but charmingly retro visuals that have proven appealing to vintage gaming enthusiasts. The new mobile app extends this functionality directly to smartphones, allowing users to take photos using the Game Boy Camera without requiring an actual Game Boy console.
This represents an evolution of Epilogue’s earlier work with the Game Boy Camera. Approximately two years prior, the company successfully converted the vintage camera into a functional desktop webcam. The latest mobile app continues this modernization effort, expanding access to the camera’s unique visual output and making it available to a broader audience of retro enthusiasts and collectors who can now experience the hardware’s nostalgic aesthetic through contemporary devices.
