As GTA Online readies for another large update, and GTA 6 approaches, Rockstar offers free upgrades to GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X

Rockstar Games has announced free upgrade paths for Grand Theft Auto 5 across multiple platforms, enabling owners of previous-generation versions to access next-generation editions at no cost.

The promotion applies differently depending on platform and version type. PS4 players can upgrade to the PS5 version for free regardless of whether they own physical or digital copies. However, physical PS4 disc owners must retain their Blu-ray discs and insert them each time they play the PS5 version. Digital PS4 owners can download the PS5 edition directly through their console’s game hub.

On Xbox, the upgrade offer is more limited. Only digital Xbox One owners can upgrade to Xbox Series X/S versions for free; physical copy owners are ineligible due to what Rockstar describes as “limitations of the platform.” PC players with the Legacy version of GTA 5 can upgrade to the Enhanced edition without additional cost.

This promotional offer arrives strategically as Rockstar prepares for significant upcoming releases. Grand Theft Auto Online is scheduled to receive The Kortz Center Heist update in July 2026, while the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for November 19, 2026, with preorders opening soon. These free upgrades likely aim to consolidate the player base on current-generation hardware ahead of GTA 6’s launch.
