A fan-driven restoration project is underway to digitally remaster all 223 issues of Sonic the Comic, a celebrated UK gaming publication that ran from May 1993 to January 2002. Originally published by Fleetway, the comic became a significant artifact of British gaming culture during the 1990s.
While Sonic the Comic primarily featured Sonic the Hedgehog and related characters, each issue included diverse strips showcasing other Sega franchises—including Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Eternal Champions, Kid Chameleon, Decap Attack, Ecco the Dolphin, Wonder Boy, and Shining Force. This broad coverage of the Sega ecosystem made the publication valuable to fans across multiple gaming interests.
Despite maintaining a dedicated UK fanbase throughout its nine-year run, the comic has never been officially reprinted since its conclusion. When Egmont acquired Fleetway, the rights holder showed no interest in reissuing the material, leaving the publication inaccessible to modern audiences.
The Sonic the Comic Remastered initiative aims to preserve this lost piece of gaming history by restoring and digitally releasing all issues. The project plans to add newly restored issues every weekday, making the entire catalog gradually available while building sustained community engagement. This fan-led effort represents an important example of preservation activism in gaming, keeping historically significant media alive when official channels have abandoned it.
