Valve Provides Update on Steam Controller Reservations
Valve announced an updated reservation system for its Steam Controller following overwhelming demand that exceeded initial expectations. Since its launch in early May 2025, the trackpad-equipped gamepad has quickly sold out multiple times. The company now provides customers with three estimated shipping windows for obtaining the controller: by September 2026, by December 2026, or sometime in 2027.
However, the outlook for new customers is challenging: any reservations made today will have a 2027 shipping date. The updated system aims to manage expectations given the significant gap between current demand and Valve’s manufacturing capacity for the remainder of 2026. Despite the supply constraints, Valve committed to continuing production, stating it has “no plans to stop making Steam Controller.”
The shortage reflects broader industry challenges, including component scarcity and rising production costs. Valve has struggled to secure necessary semiconductor components amid increased competition for electronic parts. The situation mirrors supply constraints affecting the hardware industry more broadly, with demand for AI applications and other electronics putting pressure on global silicon availability.
