Epic Says AI Will Play A Bigger Role In Unreal Engine 6
Epic Games has unveiled significant generative AI integration in Unreal Engine 6, announced at its State of Unreal showcase. The company described the AI implementation as an “art concepting process” that augments handcrafted designs created by artists using tools like Blender and Photoshop, translating them into 3D in-game models.
The AI system is designed to reduce tedious development work, but Epic emphasized that human creativity and oversight remain paramount. “The design is king,” one Epic employee stated, noting that while AI can generate generic content, the company uses it specifically to refine artist-created concepts. Human artists must still review and clean up imperfections introduced by the AI during the translation process.
The announcement arrives amid broader industry challenges. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney framed the current moment as a “time of both crisis and opportunity,” discussing the company’s vision to compete with Roblox’s metaverse platform through what he described as a “very different” massive everythingverse. The comments come months after Epic laid off over 1,000 employees, making the forward-looking technological investments particularly significant for the company’s future direction.
