Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake needs to unite fans of Breath of the Wild and classic Zelda
Nintendo has announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2, set to release later this year. The announcement came during a Nintendo Direct and confirms weeks of fan speculation about the future of the Zelda franchise.
Originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, Ocarina of Time was a landmark title that successfully brought the Zelda series into three-dimensional gameplay. The N64 version achieved substantial commercial success, selling over 7 million copies. A 3DS remaster significantly expanded its audience, bringing total sales to more than 14 million units across both platforms.
However, despite addressing major questions about the franchise’s direction, the announcement has done little to reassure the divided fanbase. The Zelda community appears fractured between those who favor the classic formula and fans of the more recent Breath of the Wild open-world approach. The remake announcement hasn’t clearly communicated how it will satisfy both factions, leaving uncertainty about which direction Nintendo is taking with this beloved title.
