Activision Confirms Call of Duty: Black Ops Ports to PS5/PS4 Are Not Remasters
Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in July, with all three game modes—campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies—included. However, the publisher emphasized an important distinction: these are straight ports, not remasters.
The clarification addresses fan expectations, as many assumed the releases would be fully remastered versions with enhanced graphics or modernized features. Instead, the ports appear to be direct conversions of the original games to current PlayStation hardware, meaning players should temper expectations regarding visual upgrades or gameplay improvements.
The original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 games were released on PlayStation 3, but the console’s unusual Cell architecture prevented them from being playable under backward compatibility on PS4 or PS5. These new ports solve that problem by bringing the classic titles to modern PlayStation hardware for the first time.
The announcement came from Treyarch via social media with minimal fanfare, though the releases had leaked earlier when they appeared on Korea’s rating board. Activision has not yet revealed pricing details, whether the two games will be offered as a bundle, or whether DLC content will be available for the ports. The Black Ops series remains among the most beloved Call of Duty games, making their return to PlayStation significant for long-time fans.
