Turok: Origins has great boss fights but struggles to stand out
Saber Interactive’s Turok: Origins aims to revive the long-dormant dinosaur-shooter franchise with a fresh co-op focus. The Turok series once thrived on the Nintendo 64 as a pioneering first-person shooter featuring dinosaurs and sci-fi elements, but has struggled to maintain relevance in the decades since its peak.
The franchise has seen several revival attempts over the years, including a middling 2008 reboot and subsequent remastered releases of the original titles. Now, Turok: Origins takes another swing at capturing what made the series special, emphasizing cooperative multiplayer shooter action while retaining the signature “dinosaurs meet sci-fi” flavor that defined the property.
According to early hands-on impressions from Summer Game Fest, Turok: Origins delivers some standout boss encounters that showcase the team’s design ambitions. However, the game hasn’t fully impressed early reviewers as a complete package. While the core elements that made Turok appealing are present—including the dinosaur-filled environments and blended sci-fi aesthetic—the game struggles to differentiate itself in a crowded shooter market and hasn’t yet captured the magic that made the original N64 titles memorable.
The co-op focus represents a deliberate design choice to modernize the franchise for contemporary gaming preferences, but whether this approach will be enough to attract both longtime fans and newcomers remains uncertain.
