Gen Atlas might be The Iron Giant of video games
Fumito Ueda, the acclaimed creator of Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, is developing a new game called Gen Atlas through his independent studio Gen Design. The project, formerly known as Project Robot, centers on a deceptively simple concept: giant robots. According to Ueda, the game originated from his search for a universal theme that would resonate with players worldwide.
Ueda drew inspiration from his childhood experiences growing up in Japan, where giant robots were ubiquitous across popular media—appearing on television, in manga, on posters, and throughout daily life. He aims to evoke the same sense of wonder and power fantasy that captivated him as a child, translating the appeal of piloting colossal machines into an interactive experience for a new generation of players.
While Ueda refrained from naming a specific giant robot franchise as direct inspiration, his vision for Gen Atlas appears to capture the essence of that cultural phenomenon. The project represents Ueda’s continued exploration of grand, emotionally resonant gameplay concepts, building on the legacy of his previous works that have been praised for their artistic ambition and unique design philosophies.
