Xbox Store seems to be planning a consumer-friendly update with price history transparency for games and add-ons

Microsoft is developing a consumer-friendly update for the Xbox Store that would introduce price history indicators for games and add-ons, helping players determine whether a title is genuinely discounted. The feature would display whether a game is currently at its lowest price within a recent timeframe, enabling shoppers to make informed purchasing decisions.

The update was discovered by security researcher @redphx through analysis of Xbox backend code shared on X (formerly Twitter). The tool would allow consumers to compare current prices against historical lows across a specified period, preventing misleading discount claims and improving price transparency across the digital storefront.

This feature would bring the Xbox Store in line with consumer protection standards already mandated in European Union markets. The EU’s Omnibus Directive requires digital retailers to display price discounts relative to the lowest price offered during the previous 30 days. Microsoft’s planned implementation would extend comparable transparency to U.S.-based customers, addressing a common consumer complaint about digital game pricing.

The update reflects broader industry momentum toward retail transparency and consumer-friendly practices on digital storefronts. While not yet officially announced or deployed, the presence of this functionality in backend systems indicates active development. The feature could strengthen consumer confidence in Xbox Store pricing and establish a standard that other digital platforms may follow.
