Nintendo’s Switch eShop update arrives 9 years too late

Nintendo has released a major system update for the original Switch console, nine years after the console’s initial launch. The update arrives just one year into the Switch 2’s release cycle and marks a point where Nintendo is clearly prioritizing the successor console over the original hardware.

The centerpiece of this update is a long-overdue fix to the Switch eShop, Nintendo’s digital storefront, which has been a persistent point of frustration for Switch users throughout the console’s lifecycle. The eShop has struggled with poor curation and usability issues, making it difficult for players to discover quality games among the thousands of titles available.

The timing of the update underscores Nintendo’s transition to its newer console. With only one remaining first-party title scheduled for the original Switch—Rhythm Heaven Groove, releasing next month—the company appears to be wrapping up its support for the original hardware. Following that release, Nintendo’s development focus will shift entirely to Switch 2 software.
