Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene “moves forward with a smaller team”, as Prologue: Go Wayback! studio struggles to find funding

Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, creator of PUBG, has announced that PlayerUnknown Productions is reducing its headcount and moving forward with a smaller team following struggles to secure additional funding. In a statement posted to Twitter/X, Greene acknowledged the decision to cut staff “was not an easy decision to make” and expressed gratitude toward the team for their professionalism during the transition.

Greene highlighted the challenging state of the games industry’s funding landscape, noting that the studio’s ability to remain operational has been partially sustained by his personal financial support. He candidly acknowledged that “the ability to keep the studio’s lights on by myself […] is a luxury few developers have when they go independent,” underscoring the precarious position many independent developers face when unable to secure traditional funding sources.

The studio continues development on Prologue: Go Wayback!, with Greene indicating the team remains committed to the project despite the staffing reduction and funding constraints. The announcement reflects ongoing industry-wide challenges, with numerous studios facing significant layoffs and financing difficulties in recent years.
