How a 12 year wait made Alien Isolation 2 a better sequel
Creative Assembly is returning to the Alien franchise after a 12-year hiatus with Alien: Isolation 2. The studio, known primarily for real-time strategy games, pivoted in 2014 to create Alien: Isolation, a survival-horror title that challenged players with an unforgiving atmospheric experience aboard a decaying space station, stalked by an intelligent alien creature.
While the original game initially struggled to find an immediate mainstream audience, it has since been critically re-evaluated and stands as one of the most acclaimed horror games of the 2010s. The significant time gap between the original and sequel has given Creative Assembly the opportunity to refine their approach to the survival-horror genre and the Alien universe. Game Developer spoke with creative director Al Hope and animation director Simon Ridge about the studio’s ambitious return to the franchise and what technological and creative advancements the 12-year wait has enabled for the sequel.
