Bungie Developers Repeatedly Pitched a Destiny Dating Sim, but Leadership Rejected It
Bungie developers repeatedly pitched a Destiny dating simulator inspired by Dream Daddy, but the studio’s leadership repeatedly rejected the concept, according to former employees.
Former Bungie community member Liana Ruppert and former senior narrative designer Robert Brookes revealed on social media that developers had actually created a prototype during what appears to have been an internal game jam or prototyping event. The dating sim never progressed beyond this stage due to leadership’s resistance.
According to Ruppert, leadership gave a “hard no” to the project, with decision-makers believing that players didn’t want romance or silliness in the Destiny universe. The concept reportedly drew inspiration from Dream Daddy, a popular dating simulation game known for its humorous approach to the genre.
The revelation highlights a disconnect between some developers’ creative interests and the strategic direction leadership wanted to pursue for the franchise. While dating sims have become increasingly mainstream in gaming, the Bungie leadership team apparently felt such a departure wouldn’t resonate with the Destiny 2 player base.
