“This crisis was avoidable, but our bosses chose to drive blindly towards disaster”: French videogame union STJV call for national industry strike day
The French Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV) union has announced a national strike across France’s video game industry scheduled for June 25th, citing the ongoing wave of layoffs impacting the sector. The strike, branded as “Summer Greve Fest,” represents an escalation in labor activism amid widespread studio closures and workforce reductions.
The union’s call to action demands “major organisational changes within their companies,” with workers expressing frustration over industry leadership’s handling of the crisis. A statement from STJV emphasized that “everything points to the French video game industry being in a critical situation,” while the union characterized the ongoing layoffs as an avoidable catastrophe driven by poor management decisions.
The strike will commence with a picket line at the Paris headquarters of Quantic Dream, the developer behind Detroit: Become Human. The action aims to unite workers across the French games industry in coordinated protest against conditions in the sector.
