Marathon Mid-Season Update Introduces New Endgame PvE Mode

Marathon is receiving a new experimental PvE mode called Vault Breaker as part of its mid-season update on July 21st, 2026. The mode allows players to explore the Cryo Archive map—the game’s endgame raid-like content—in customizable group configurations: solo, as a duo, or as a full crew, without encountering other players.

Vault Breaker features a series of progressively challenging vaults that players must navigate through a unique progression system leading to a final vault and a mysterious entity within. To access the mode, players must equip a special Sponsored Kit. The mode introduces an unconventional twist for an extraction shooter: any gear and items discovered in the vaults are left behind when players exit, rather than being extracted for permanent retention.

This design choice has sparked discussion within the community, with some noting that Vault Breaker doesn’t function as a traditional extraction mode precisely because of this loot mechanic. Instead, it addresses concerns from players who enjoy Marathon’s gunplay and aesthetics but are deterred by the pressure and competitive nature of extraction shooters. The PvE-focused approach removes the threat of encountering other players while still providing challenging combat scenarios.

The update comes as Marathon attempts to revitalize player engagement following a challenging launch in March 2026. The introduction of a dedicated PvE experience represents an effort to broaden the game’s appeal beyond extraction shooter enthusiasts. Additionally, Bungie has announced that Season 3 will begin in September 2026, indicating ongoing content plans for the title.
